Whether you hang on the forecasts of Tom Skilling or Accuweather, today is going to be a scorcher where the high temp may flirt with a record set 40 years ago. The high temp then was 97 degrees; WGN's Chicago Weather Center predicts a high of 96, so keep an eye out on the official reading from O'Hare today.

The heat will be compounded by gusty winds from the southwest and humidity levels that will push heat indices across the area into the triple digits. Be smart if you have to go outside and check on the elderly and infirm. We are due for a break in the heat with a thunderstorm tonight.
