The Labor Day weekend means a respite from the glut of street fests in Chicago, but a few notable events are in place if you're staying around town.
African Festival of the Arts
The 24th edition of this festival features arts, crafts, and musical acts such as blues singers Otis Clay and Syleena Johnson, guitarist Oliver Mtukudzi and singer Brandy, who recently played to a crowd of 40 in South Africa. She should find a larger audience for her Labor Day set.
The African Festival of the Arts is in Washington Park at 5100 S. Cottage Grove on Friday from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Saturday, Sunday and Monday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Daily admission is $20, and a weekend pass is $30.
Taste of Polonia
Bring an empty stomach and fill it with kielbasa, pierogi, and plenty of beer while taking in the sights and sounds of Chicago's Polish Community outside the Copernicus Center in Jefferson Park.
Taste of Polonia is at the Copernicus Center at 5216 W. Lawrence Avenue on Friday from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m., Saturday and Sunday from noon to 11 p.m. and Monday from noon to 10 p.m.
Remix Chicago
Ravenswood Remix has a new name and location but the mission is the same. This recycled art fair sells the wares and educates attendees on recycling items into new pieces of art. It features workshops. And check out the music lineup.
Remix Chicago runs from noon until 10 p.m. Aug. 31 and Sept. 1
Chicago Fringe Festival
Chicago's premiere festival celebrating experimental theater moves from Pilsen to Jefferson Park this year from Aug. 29 through Sept. 8. Check out the schedule here.
