Our Picks For The Incoming Fall Season (Whether You Like It Or Not)

Whether you choose to admit it or not, Fall is right around the corner in Chicago. If you are ready to dive right in--and since some local businesses are already offering up a taste of the Fall season--we thought we'd also share what we’re looking forward to during the upcoming sweater season.

Fall means Halloween, which means scary movies, and there are some screenings of some classics I'm already excited about. Especially Rosemary's Baby; the long-lost director's cut of The Wicker Man at the Music Box; and the amazing, underseen Vincent Price shocker Witchfinder General at the Siskel. Also looking forward to cider-based cocktails at the Barrelhouse Flat. - Rob Christopher

Popular opinion tends toward things slowing down in the fall, but fortunately that isn't the case. Chicago Humanities Fest (November 1-10) and Chicago Ideas Week (October 14-20) deliver an influx of inspiration geared toward arts, community, and innovation, with speakers, panels, and workshops throughout the city. Open House Chicago (October 19-20) offers free behind-the-scenes access to architectural gems in every corner of Chicago. Enjoy the crunching of leaves underfoot as you take in the town with compelling fall programming. - Jessica Mlinaric

Octoberfest beer always makes me happy. Honeycrisp apples can't get here soon enough. - L. Stolpman (Editors note--County Line Orchard in Hobart, IN has a handy apple ripening chart, and apparently Honeycrisp season is upon us!)

This may be too general, but I'm always excited for apple picking--even though I really feel the little paper bags they mandate you use as depositories are way too small and you should be able to bring your own laundry basket. Also, any kind of chili cook-off thing (I think there are several) is a good time. - Melissa Wiley

I look forward to indulging a good percentage of my grocery budget snatching up anything pumpkin flavor I can get my hands on. I’ll take one of everything; pumpkin ice cream, pumpkin beer, pumpkin cheese, pumpkin coffee, pumpkin pasta.

I already spotted Pumking beer for sale at Jewel this last week. And, of course, I won’t neglect all things apple-flavored as well. I make a yearly trip to my favorite u-pick site, the aforementioned County Line Orchard, to pick apples and stock up on cider donuts, apple butter and massive caramel apples.

The best part is riding a tractor out to the fields where you can pluck fresh fruit off the trees and eat as you fill your bag with a variety of different apples. It’s the perfect fall activity. - Lisa White
