The Dance Center of Columbia College is celebrating 40 years, and Mayor Emanuel—well known as a former dancer himself—has officially declared today to be “Dance Center of Columbia College Chicago Day.” (there’s a proclamation and everything.)

The special anniversary season kicked off last night with the premiere of an intriguing postmodern piece from from Susan Marshall & Company. Play/Pause is an examination of modern media consumption that combines structured choreography with popular dances from what they call the “YouTube zeitgeist.” Pulitzer Prize winner David Lang composed the score to be performed live by the experimental electric guitar quartet Dither.

Two opportunities remain to see Play/Pause this weekend: tonight and tomorrow night at 8 p.m. Tickets are $26 to $30. Both shows are at The Dance Center located at 1306 S. Michigan Ave.
