Universal Studios' classic monster movie franchise was an afterthought by the time 1954’s The Creature from the Black Lagoon provided an unlikely hit for the studio. The combination of the unique look of “The Gill Man,” a tense and repetitive soundtrack guaranteed to get audiences to respond to the horror on the screen in unison, 3-D viewings and the curves of star Julie Adams gave Universal the final addition to its coterie of creatures.
Universal made two sequels but they didn’t have the box office or critical success of the original, which still lives on in different video formats and screenings across the country, including an event Sept. 28 at the Patio Theater. The Northwest side movie house has benefited greatly from the shuttering of the Portage Theater, with the Northwest Chicago Film Society calling the space home and now the classic and schlocky horror films which were one of the anchors of the Portage’s programming now screening at the Patio.
The Sept. 28 event will feature two screenings of The Creature from the Black Lagoon in 3-D at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Julie Adams will be in attendance signing copies of her new book The Lucky Southern Star, Reflections From The Black Lagoon , as well as taking photos and signing autographs.
The cost for the screenings is $10 each and can be purchased online or at the following locations:
Shake Rattle & Read 4812 N. Broadway
Laurie's Planet of Sound 4639 N. Lincoln
