Lynfred Winery in Roselle is proof you don’t need to book a flight or even a rental car in order to visit wine country right outside the city limits. The largest winery in Illinois always surprises would-be oenophiles with their craftsmanship and wide array of wine styles.

Get into the harvest spirit Oct. 5 and 6 with Lynfred’s annual Oktoberfest and pig roast. Enjoy two days of family-friendly events, German sing-a-longs, grape spitting, cork tossing and grape stomping contests. The roast pig, however, is always the star of the show and can be served as a sandwich or a dinner complete with potato salad and fixings. If eating Babe isn’t on your agenda, enjoy grilled bratwurst burgers and fresh corn, homemade chili, taffy apples, apple strudel or German chocolate cake, all of them paired with Lynfred’s Oktoberfest wine, which will be released at the start of the festival.

Lynfred Winery’s Oktoberfest runs 3-9 p.m. Oct. 5 and Noon-7 p.m. Oct. 6 at the winery, 15 S. Roselle Road in Roselle.
