Cross Joe Girardi off the Cubs list to replace manager Dale Sveum. Girardi signed a four-year deal a few moments ago to remain skipper of the New York Yankees, ending any hopes the Cubs had of draping him in the colors of the team where he started his playing career.

Girardi will make $16 million over the course of his new deal and came a day after Yankees chairman Hal Steinbrenner publicly said he wanted Girardi to return to the club. The Yankees missed the postseason with an 85-77 record but have always shown the willingness to spend whatever they needed to field a contender and this aging club is still closer to a World Series than the Cubs, who are in the midst of a youth movement. The Yankees have the best record in the major leagues (564-408— a .580 winning percentage) since hiring Girardi in 2008.

The Cubs, now that Girardi is off the market, are believed to be eyeing Cleveland Indians bench coach Sandy Alomar, Jr. Other potential candidates include former Arizona Diamondbacks manager A.J. Hinch and former Indians and Washington Nationals manager Manny Acta.
