Frankie Rose is in town tonight, opening for Franz Ferdinand at The Vic, and we have to admit her album Herein Wild has been getting quite a bit of play in the Chicagoist offices. The first time we listened to it we had to double back and make certain that it wasn't a re-release, since it so strongly evokes the late '80s and early '90s feel of female fronted bands out of the UK—by way of NYC in Rose's case—that were equally at home amidst chugging guitars or glowing dreamscapes. Rose's vocals are strong and crystalline, allowing her to completely own every song on the album, even as they flit from style to style and grow or descend in volume and aggression. Her mastery isn't surprising considering she has had an impressive career up until this point as both a solo artist and previously as a member of bands including Crystal Stilts, Dum Dum Girls and the Vivian Girls.

This new album stands apart from her other work, though. The shimmering production allows the music to pass indeterminately amongst Rose's many influences, and this allows the songs to float upward. Rose has often trafficked in genres pulling from the past, but here she seems to have moved beyond tribute to her influences and grown into a singular influence herself.

Unfortunately, unless you already have tickets, you won't be able to see her play tonight since the show is sold out, but you can still come out on top by owning your morning and enjoying two tunes from Herein Wild below.
