A 40-year-old man in the Roseland neighborhood was shot and killed by police Tuesday night after he stabbed a sergeant in the face with a butcher knife.
The sergeant and two other officers responded to a 911 call from a home on the 200 block of East 107th Street that ended abruptly. When they arrived they heard a woman (the suspect’s mother) scream and forced their way into the home. The sergeant was the first to enter and was stabbed several times by the man, who was holding a butcher knife.
The other cops pulled the sergeant to safety as the suspect barricaded himself inside the home. The other two officers re-entered the home, found the suspect in downstairs armed with two knives and shot him after he lunged at the officers, according to a police report.
The suspect’s mother was also wounded in the incident. She suffered puncture wounds and was treated at Roseland Hospital. The sergeant was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center with a puncture wound to his temple and several lacerations. He is in serious condition but his injuries aren’t expected to be life threatening.
