Former congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. could begin serving his 30-month prison sentence as early as next week now that he and wife Sandi have found a way to pay off a significant portion of the $750,000 fine levied against him for using his campaign account for personal use.
CBS 2 reports the Jacksons will use proceeds from the sale of their Washington, D.C. home to pay the balance of the fine. According to court documents, the couple agreed to pay $200,000 by Nov. 1, with the balance due by June 1, 2014. The Jacksons cashed in an account with the securities firm H. Beck and, in addition to the sale of their DuPont Circle home; the balance will be covered by gifts from friends and family.
The Jacksons expressed concern over their financial security after they were handed their sentences in August but the agreement will allow Sandi Jackson to continue to work while her husband is in prison without having the fine hanging over their heads. If the agreement is approved Jackson could report to the federal correctional center in Butner, N.C. sometime after Nov. 1. The center has a medical complex which was a determining factor in Jackson being assigned to serve his sentence there, since he’s still being treated for bi-polar disorder. After Jackson completes his sentence, Sandi Jackson will begin serving her one-year sentence.
