Dia de Los Muertos is this Saturday, Nov. 2, and it’s a holiday whose concepts we can really appreciate. It acknowledges death as a part of life, and is meant to honor the lives of loved ones no longer with us, but it’s a celebration full of beauty, color and laughter rather than dirges and sackcloth. Community is a huge part of this celebration, and the Pullman Historic Site is asking the community to join them in a fundraising event to preserve its own history.
Visitors will be able to tour private Pullman homes and see the beautiful ofrenda-adorned altars from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. They can then toast Catrina at the reception, held at the factory site from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The tour starts at the Pullman Clock Tower, where visitors can purchase tickets, get information, and grab a map to find their way.
We like our tricks and treats here at Chicagoist and would never snub our nose at Halloween itself but we love Dia de Los Muertos even more, with the intricate sugar skulls, bright orange marigolds and carefully constructed altars. This is a great chance to tour the neighborhood if you missed the Open House and to get acquainted with the holiday if you weren’t already.
It’s a great combination of amazing architecture and history come back to life, and proceeds from ticket sales go directly to help preserve the neighborhood. We’re adding it to our calendar and hope you’ll do the same. Tickets are $15 prior to the event and $20 dollars at the door, and you can get more information or make reservations by calling (773) 660-2341 or sending an email to the event's organizers.
