Northwestern University’s football team will be wearing these custom uniforms during their Nov. 16 game against Michigan at Ryan Field. The one-off uniforms are intended to raise awareness and support for the Wounded Warrior Project, a nonprofit organization that works to honor and assist wounded veterans.
Deadspin’s Barry Petchesky had some qualms with the design of the uniforms, notably how the red color of the stars and stripes may appear (to some) to emulate blood splatter. As you can see from the close-ups there is nearly as much blue splatter inside the stars, as well. One man’s appearance of blood splatter is another’s “edgy” (read: “bad”) design.
Under Armour is also replacing the last names of players on the jerseys with one of seven military “core value embellishments:” duty; honor; commitment; courage; integrity; country; and service. The uniforms are now available for purchase; 10 percent of each sale will benefit WWP. An auction of game-worn jerseys will happen after the Michigan game at NUsports.com with 100 percent of the proceeds going to WWP. Or you can simply donate to WWP here.
