There were a variety of outfits to choose from last week if you were celebrating Halloween, but a handful of Chicagoans picked one of the most frightful real life scenario costumes around—a Ventra card. But one clever costumer got more negative attention than he bargained for. The RedEye spoke to Jake Gunst, a 26-year-old from Chinatown, who decided to celebrate the spooky season dressed as a Ventra card, one of the true terrors that is causing many a Chicago resident nightmares the last few months.

Gunst spent most of time at parties in the costume, but shared his not-so-nice experience while wearing it in public with the RedEye.

“All I had to do was walk around the short corner, and in that span of time, there were all these ‘(bleep) you!’ and ‘I hate you’ comments,” he said. “When I walked into a bar, the bartender stopped to look at me. I said ‘I was told I could use this for everyday purchases’”

We applaud Gunst on his quick wit when responding to the skeptical bartender. We always love a well executed jab at Ventra. He went on to talk about some physical interactions he received from angry Ventra users and pondered if the hatred for Ventra made him lose a few best costume contests.

“I think a lot of people projected what they thought of Ventra on me,” he said. “I was several times in the running for bes costume. I never won. I think people couldn’t separate their hate for Ventra from the actual costume.”

It’s ok Jake, you are still best costume in our Ventra loathing hearts. The best part of all of this is Gunst is still waiting to receive his own Ventra card in the mail. We hope he doesn’t receive a few hundred now from the Ventra gods as punishment for his sense of humor.
