Morning Box Score: Hossa Paces Hawks In Dallas; College Basketball Is Here

The Blackhawks put together two straight all-around games with Saturday night's win in Big D. Marian Hossa scored two goals, Patrick Sharp assisted on four of the Hawks' five goals and Corey Crawford saved 31 shots on goal as the Hawks were able to play their puck possession game to near-perfection. Dallas took an early 1-0 lead in the first period on a goal by Cody Eakin but Hossa tied the score with 3:09 left in the period. The Stars re-took the lead on a sweet wrist shot by Tyler Seguin in the second period before the Blackhawks took command. The Hawks return home to face the Edmonton Oilers tonight. Puck drop is at 6:30 p.m.

College Football

Pittsburgh 28, Notre Dame 21
The Irish's hopes for a Bowl Championship Series berth took a hit Saturday night in the Steel City. Notre Dame committed three turnovers, including two late interceptions by quarterback Tommy Rees, and had costly penalties extend drives to help the Panthers upset the 23rd-ranked Irish. James Conner rushed for two touchdowns and quarterback Tom Savage threw for a score for Pittsburgh.

Indiana 52, Illinois 35
The Illini's Big Ten losing streak has now reached a school record 19 games after Saturday's loss in Bloomington. Hoosiers receiver Cody Latimer set career highs with 11 catches for 189 yards receiving and caught three touchdowns. Nathan Scheelhaase threw for 450 yards and two touchdowns and added 45 yards and a score on the ground, and Steve Hulll had a monster game with nine receptions for 224 yards and two touchdowns for Illinois.

College Basketball


Northwestern 72, Eastern Illinois 55

The Chris Collins era in Evanston started with a relatively easy win at Welsh-Ryan arena. Drew Crawford scored 25 points and 11 rebounds and JerShon Cobb scored eight points and dished out nine assists as the Wildcats broke open the game in the second half, Collins shouting and looking much like his father Doug most of the way.

DePaul 96, Grambling State 58
Cleveland Martin was perfect from the three-point line and scored 17 points and freshman Tommy Hamilton IV scored 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as the Blue Demons kicked off their 2013-14 campaign with a resounding win at McGrath-Phillips Arena.
