In a sure sign that winter is around the corner, the McCormick Tribune Ice Rink in Millennium Park is now open.

The rink has been around for over a decade and has drawn over 100,000 people each season to downtown Chicago. It also is a wonderful sight to see when the wind chill makes being outside nearly unbearable. It's always free and open to the public. Skate rental costs $10, so this is an even better bargain if you have your own skates.

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events is hosting "winter workouts" at the rink this season. Free ice skating lessons will be offered one hour before the rink opens Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Each Thursday will feature ice sports skills and drills for Noodle Hockey, curling and speed.

The rink will be open until March 9, 2014 (weather permitting). Hours of operation are:

Monday-Thursday, Noon-8 p.m.
Friday, Noon-10 p.m.
Saturday (Through Jan. 4), 10 a.m.-10 p.m.
Saturday (Beginning Jan. 11), 10 a.m.-9 p.m.
Sunday, 10 a.m.-9 p.m.
