A goofy holiday favorite balances out two powerful stage dramas this week in Chicago theater.

Elf the Musical

Okay, so there’s no Will Ferrell, but the stage show's still got all the goofy charm of every millennial’s favorite holiday movie. The antics of North Pole-born Buddy the elf looking for his dad in New York City are pure Christmas cheer. The show runs Tuesday, Nov. 26 through Sunday, Dec. 15.

Cadillac Palace Theatre, 151 W. Randolph, 312-384-1502 or online.

An Iliad

The haunting Timothy Edward Kane is back at the Court Theatre reprising his role in Charles Newell’s one-man adaptation of Homer’s An Iliad. Don’t miss it this time around. The show runs through Sunday, Dec. 15.

Court Theatre, 5535 S. Ellis Ave., 773-753-4472 or online.

Appropriate

Gary Griffin’s latest production takes a look at the psycho-social issues surrounding adult siblings who return home to divvy up their deceased father's estate and end up finding much more than they bargained for. The show runs through Sunday, Dec. 8.

Victory Gardens Theater, 2433 N. Lincoln Ave., 773-871-3000 or online.
