It was a mostly calm Thanksgiving evening for area retailers looking to get a jump on their holiday sales but the night wasn't without incident. A suspected shoplifter was shot trying to flee a Romeoville Kohl's Thursday night while dragging a police officer with his car.

Romeoville Police responded to a call of two people shoplifting clothes from a Kohl's department store at 261 S. Weber Rd. around 10 p.m. Thursday night. When they arrived at the scene they found the suspects hauling a shopping cart out of the store to a black Pontiac Sunfire.

One of the officers approached the suspects and got into a struggle with one. The struggle resulted in the officer becoming caught inside the car and the driver sped off, ignoring calls to stop. Another officer drew his weapon and fired at the car, hitting the driver in the shoulder.

The driver of the vehicle and two other suspects are in custody. The driver and the officer who was dragged along with the vehicle were taken to area hospitals with non-life threatening injuries.
