Skip the black Friday crowds and see a Shakespeare classic or a gripping Steppenwolf drama instead.

A Q Brothers' Christmas Carol

The same guys who came up with the hip hop version of Othello are returning to Chicago Shakespeare Theater to put their lyrical spin on A Christmas Carol. The show runs through Sunday Dec. 22.

Chicago Shakespeare Theater, 800 E. Grand Ave., 312-595-5600 or online.

The Merry Wives of Windsor

Yes, another Chicago Shakespeare show. But we're excited to see favorite Chicago leading lady Heidi Kettenring return to the stage in a jovial Bard classic. The show runs through Sunday, Jan. 19.

Tribes

The Steppenwolf’s newest play showcases what they do best: gritty family dramas with characters who stay with you, long after you leave Lincoln Park. The show runs through Sunday, Feb. 9.

Steppenwolf Theatre, 1650 N. Halsted, 312-335-1650 or online.
