As Dominick’s supermarkets enter their final days in business their longtime competitor over the years, Jewel-Osco, is offering an enticement to Dominick’s soon-to-be former customers.

Jewel-Osco is offering a one-time only 10 percent discount to Dominick’s customers who surrender their Fresh Values rewards cards at a Jewel store. DNAInfo Chicago spoke with Mike Gleeson, general manager of the Jewel-Osco at 1341 N. Paulina Ave. who said his store is dumping the cards as they’re turned in.

Jewel-Osco spokeswoman Allison Sperling added the discount only applies to groceries and general merchandise and runs through Dec. 31. The company is not taking any personal information from the Fresh Values loyalty cards, Sperling said.

Ironically, Jewel-Osco ended its own customer loyalty program six months ago. Seeing as how both Jewel-Osco and Dominick’s have lost customers in recent years as new supermarkets like Mariano’s Fresh Markets have enter the area, maybe Jewel-Osco should work on finding other ways to be competitive moving forward.
