We first became fans of local singer/songwriter Musikanto back in 2009 with the release of his debut Ghost Pain. He crafts up warm folk ballads that couple strummed acoustic with heartfelt crooning—the kind of melodies we find ourselves returning to it every year on bleak, wintry days like these. That’s not going to change now that Musikanto
(that’s his real last name) has changed his performing name to Crow Moses.

The local folkie hasn’t released a new album since 2012’s Sky of Dresses, but he has recorded a new track under his new name: “Horse Heaven Hills,” which you can listen to on his site. It’s along the same vein as his previous stuff—soulful, gentle, easy on the ears.

While his sound doesn’t seem to be changing anytime soon, Musikanto has announced that his new name will come with a whole lot more touring. In fact, he’s been away trekking the States on a winter tour all month and is returning to Chicago this Friday to end the excursion with a show at the Cobra Lounge. Also performing Friday will be Crow Moses’s indie folk friends Michelle McGuire and Ryan Joseph Anderson.

Crow Moses plays Friday, Dec. 20 at Cobra Lounge, 235 N Ashland, 9 p.m., $7, 21+
