Among the many laws taking effect in Illinois one that will make drivers of the state's expressways and interstate highways happy is Senate Bill 2356, which raises the speed limit on rural highways in Illinois to 70 MPH. Governor Pat Quinn signed the bill into law in August and the law took effect Jan.1. Quinn said at the time he signed the bill the higher speed limit would "bring Illinois’ rural interstate speed limits in line with our neighbors and the majority of states across America, while preventing an increase in excessive speeding."
The Illinois Department of Transportation, Illinois State Police and lobbyists for the insurance agency opposed the bill, fearing the new speed limit would increase the possibility of a crash while cutting the odds of surviving one. Reboot Illinois has uploaded a map of the highways where the 70 MPH speed limit will be implemented. It affects 87 percent of total highways in Illinois—98 percent of all rural interstates.
The new speed limit will take effect as soon as crews set up the new signs.
