Hauntingly complex characters and chilling stories come to the Chicago stage this week—hooray for post-holiday theater.

Hedda Gabler

Kate Fry takes on the Victorian-age society wife filled with a dangerous mix of malaise and manipulation. We’re excited to see what one of Chicago’s favorite leading ladies does with Ibsen’s most infamous character. The show runs Tuesday, Jan. 7 through Sunday, March 16.

Writers’ Theatre, 376 Park Ave., Glencoe, 847-242-6000 or online.

At His Best

A new play by Cassandra Rose tells the story of the soon-to-be-married Caroline, who begins piecing together the surprising life of her long-dead mother. As if the plot’s not compelling enough, the theater company’s mission is to tell stories “about the things we hide from ourselves and others.” Enough said. The show runs through Saturday, Jan. 4 through Sunday, Jan. 26.

Cold Basement Theatrics at The DenTheatre, 1333 N. Milwaukee Ave., 773-569-3454 or online.

Ghost the Musical

Yep, it’s the stage version—a musical, no less—of the Patrick Swayze / Demi Moore film from 1990. Call it morbid curiosity, but we’re definitely not missing the chance to see a stage reenactment of the famous pottery wheel scene. The show runs through Tuesday, Jan. 7 through Sunday, Jan. 19.

Broadway in Chicago at the Ford Oriental Theatre, 24 W. Randolph, 312-977-1700 or online.
