The Chicago Board of Education announced Monday the "Polar Vortex" Chicago is currently experiencing will result in the cancellation of classes throughout the school district Tuesday.
Chicago Public Schools CEO Barbara Byrd-Bennett said the continuing cold, which set a record low on Monday, was the main reason for the cancellation of classes for a second day. Tuesday’s forecast has the mercury crossing the zero degree mark before topping out at 5 degrees. Mayor Rahm Emanuel, at a news conference this afternoon, supported CPS’ decision.
“This is some of the most extreme weather we’ve seen in the city of Chicago in decades,” Emanuel said.
