Indiana Mom Delivers Baby At Home During Monday's Polar Vortex

And you thought your Monday was rough hiding inside from the arctic temperatures. An Indianapolis woman delivered her own child yesterday after no one was able to get to her in time due to the weather. RTV6 in Indianapolis reports that baby Evangeline Beatrix Grove was born early Monday morning at home by her own mother, Mariah Grove, who had planned on a home birth but not this early.

Grove’s due date wasn’t until the 21st but late Sunday night she started having contractions. She called the midwives and her mother, but no one could get to her in time because of the severe weather plaguing the Midwest. Her contractions continued until 2 a.m. and then her water broke. The baby’s great-grandmother, snowbound herself, heard little Evangeline’s cries finally at 3:20 a.m. Grove was very proud of the teamwork between her and her new daughter:

“Once the water broke and I realized this was it, all fear went away. I realized it wasn’t going to help me and that we would be a team and do this together. And we did it," Grove said.

“The second she came out, she was crying. She was pink. She’s already nursed several times. I had no tearing. I couldn’t have asked for a better outcome.”

The healthy baby girl was born 20 inches long and weighed in at a healthy 7.5 pounds. Both Grove and her new daughter are doing well.
