The United States Senate continued their debate Wednesday on extending benefits for 1.3 million long-term unemployed, with Democrats contending failing to pass an extension will send an American economy struggling to recover back into a recession and Republicans saying they want to help but want budget cuts to offset the estimated $6.4 billion cost of the extension.
A group of six Republican senators voted with Democrats to keep the Democratic legislation alive Tuesday. During the Wednesday debate, Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin took to the Senate floor and, as plainly as possible, explained what the long-term unemployed are facing and had some choice words for his peers who keep bringing up Ayn Rand in the process.
