A DanceWorks Chicago dancer was killed on Monday during a rehearsal in what the company called “a freak occurrence.” In what’s been ruled an accident, Marco Antonio Huicochea-Gonzalez suffered a fatal head injury when he fell while "using a large steel acrobatic ring," according to DNAinfo.

Huicochea-Gonzalez, just 22 years old, joined DanceWorks last year after working with many different professional companies including Camerino 4, Cuarto Oscuro, Eterno Caracol and Gato. He began dancing in Mexico at the age of 11 and went on to study at Mexico’s National School of Classical and Contemporary Dance.

Our thoughts are with DanceWorks and the whole Chicago dance community during this devastating time, especially given that they're a small company of only six members. DanceWorks is slated to perform at Harris Theater’s Eat (and Drink) to the Beat happy hour event on Thursday, January 30th, but we’ll keep you updated of any changes to the program in light of this tragedy.
