Monday Afternoon Diversion: When Martin Luther King Met Duke Ellington In Chicago

By Chuck Sudo in Arts & Entertainment on Jan 20, 2014 9:00PM

Looking for different angles connecting Dr. Martin Luther King and Chicago this morning we found this video recounting a time when none other than Duke Ellington met with the Civil Rights icon here in Chicago. Ellington volunteered his services and name to assist in the movement and Dr. King was as in awe of meeting Ellington as Ellington was of Dr. King.

The woman being interviewed in the video is Marian Logan, a lifelong friend of Ellington's who also served as New York City Commissioner of Human Rights. Logan was also a cabaret singer in her youth and her father was the first treasurer of the Tuskegee Institute.
