We're in the home stretch of January and ending the month as it rolled in—with a deep freeze following another round of snowfall. (Makes me wish I was still on vacation.) If you're heading outside today should you know what to do by now and it doesn't involve boiling water and throwing it in the arctic air, especially since we're under a wind chill warning until 9 a.m. and it might blow back in your faces and scald you if you toss it into the wind.
The winds are gusting out of the northwest up to 40 mph, making it feel more like 45 below zero out there. They'll die down eventually but that's a cold comfort (pun totally intended) as the mercury is expected to reach minus 5 today and could dip down as low as 19 below zero overnight. Wind chill warnings will remain in effect until Tuesday night. For those of you commuting this morning be advised Metra is a shitshow on the Union Pacific North, Northwest and West lines, and North Central service. CTA seems to be doing okay as of post time and area roads are fakakta in spots thanks to the high winds and blowing snow conditions.
This is cold that could tease the record books and the mercury may not cross the zero degree barrier until Wednesday. Hunker down and dig deep into your warm beverage and comfort food stashes, folks.
