Nickel Creek's Reunion Tour Will Bring Band To Chicago

We should have had some inkling about this since reunions and anniversary tours are so hot right now, but contemporary bluegrass act Nickel Creek caught us off guard yesterday by announcing their return. Marking the 25th year since the trio—Chris Thile, Sarah Watkins and Sean Watkins—first formed, their comeback tour, the first since their "Farewell For Now" campaign in 2007, brings them to the Riviera Theater on May 9.

Fans of the trio's silky vocal melodies and rich, acoustic jams were able to take some solace in mandolinist Thile's proceeding project, the similarly folky Punch Brothers, following Nickel Creek's hiatus. Thile also won a MacArthur Fellowship and released an album of critically acclaimed sonatas and partidas by Johann Sebastian Bach last year, performed only on mandolin. The sibling team of Sarah and Sean Watkins toured with the Decemberists and Fiction Family, respectively, since the split. Sarah Watkins also established a solo career.

It appears the San Diego-based band is back in full effect though, having released a new song, "Destination," along with their new tour plans. The band confirmed the song will appear on a forthcoming album.

As exciting as it is to have new Nickel Creek songs to look forward to, we're simply thrilled to have the chance to see classics like "The Lighthouse's Tale" and "This Side" brought to life again.

Pre-sale tickets for the band's Chicago show are already on sale through their official website. Public on sale begins this Friday, Feb. 7.
