Who needs concealed carry when we have a brutal winter to keep shootings down? Chicago witnessed a rare achievement last weekend by not having any shootings reported. One shooting was reported Friday night at 8:20 p.m. and extended through Monday. (One man did shoot himself accidentally trying to defend himself during a robbery attempt Sunday night but Chicago Police don’t count self-inflicted gunshot wounds in their shooting numbers.)

Thanks in part to The Winter That Will Not End shootings are down dramatically in 2014. Shootings are down 39 percent over a year ago and homicides have dropped by 36 percent. Through Feb. 9 the city has recorded only 28 homicides. That almost makes you wish the snow wouldn’t melt.

Almost.
