This winter continues to assault the record books. The thundersnow that marked Monday's evening (non-) rush hour commute and caused whiteout conditions brought enough snowfall to push winter 2013-14 to fifth place all time in Chicago's record books.

By 6 p.m. Monday 4.7 inches of snow touched the ground in Chicago, pushing this winter's overall total to 66.8 inches and eclipsing the 66.4 inches set in 1951-52. The 2013-14 total now stands at 67.9 inches after the official snowfall reached five inches at 11 p.m.

Although much of this snow is expected to melt over the remaining week as temperatures push past the freezing mark, we will get more snow with flurries in the extended forecast for Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday. The next snowfall mark to watch is 70 inches, which has been recorded only three times in the city's history.
