Harris Theater Closed For Two Weeks After Fire [UPDATE]

More sad news following Wednesday's electrical fire at Harris Theater. This week’s performances by the Hamburg Ballet were already canceled, but the 1,525 seat theater is now going to be closed through March 6 for repairs to the damaged operational and mechanical equipment. Plans are already underway to reschedule three shows—Alonzo King LINES Ballet, Chicago Opera Theater (now March 19, 20 & 23), and the Joffrey Academy’s Choreographers of Color Awards—while another, Music of the Baroque, is looking for another venue for their March 3 program.
Luckily no one was injured as a result of the fire and there was no structural damage inside or outside the theater. Although it’s still a tough blow as the Harris celebrates its 10th anniversary season, officials are staying positive. “We remain in a state of sadness over the loss of the performances of the Hamburg Ballet,” says Michael Tiknis, President and Managing Director of the Harris Theater. “But we are confident that repairs to the theater can be made, and schedules altered in a way that will maintain the majority, if not all, of those that have been affected by this serious electrical malfunction.”
Anyone who has purchased tickets to the affected events will be contacted by a Harris Theater representative.
UPDATE:
Music of the Baroque’s Handel & Bach—Italian Style has been re-scheduled for April 21 at 7:30PM.
The Joffrey Ballet’s Winning Works: Choreographers of Color Awards will now take place on March 1 at the Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place (175 East Chestnut Street). See our preview here.
