Of all the things this winter has made Chicagoans concerned about like snow removal, pothole repair and the city catching up on both, we didn’t think dyeing the Chicago River Green for St. Patrick’s Day would be affected.

And it won’t, according to the folks charged with making that happen for 52 years. Kevin Sherlock of Journeymen Plumbers Local Union 130, the ice that’s been floating atop the river for most of this winter will not stop them from dumping 40 pounds of vegetable dye into the waters and turning it Kelly green for a limited time.

“People are concerned that it might not happen,” Sherlock told the Tribune. “Unless the river is frozen solid, they’ll get the water moving and get it done.”

Yay! A civic crisis averted. Now if they turn that ingenuity and know-how to the pothole epidemic.
