Lake Shore Drive Closed For Eight Hours At Fullerton Ave. Due To Police Standoff [UPDATE]

By Jon Graef in News on Mar 16, 2014 6:45PM

UPDATE 8:30 a.m.:The standoff with murder suspect Joseph Andrew Felton Jr. ended late Sunday evening. Felton is in custody. Lake Shore Drive completely reopened around 4:20 a.m Monday morning, according to the Trib.

UPDATE
, 2:00 p.m.: According to Lakeview Patch, the Lincoln Park Zoo is being cleared, on lockdown. However, if true, Lincoln Park Zoo's website and Twitter accounts have not been updated to reflect such information.

Also, Chicagoist Facebook poster Jennifer Beightley said, "The police have blocked all the way up at Foster and traffic is stuck up to Lawrence."

Lake Shore Drive is closed both ways at Fullerton Avenue due to a police chase involving a suspect in an alleged homicide. ABC 7 reports that the police chase started in south suburban Harvey, and traveled up to Fullerton.

DNAInfo has also reported that the suspect's car crashed near the Fullerton exit, the suspect is apparently still in the vehicle, and there now is a SWAT team negotiator on the way. The information, however, comes from "unconfirmed police scanner dispatches," so details surrounding the situation could easily change.

The Tribune has more, including an employee who was an eyewitness:

According to Harvey Police Department spokeswoman Sandra Alvarado, the person in the vehicle police were pursuing is wanted in connection with a murder in Hampton, Ga., and the chase resulted from an investigation involving the Harvey police and police in Georgia.

...

[A] Tribune employee who saw the scene on her way to work [saw] a dark-colored vehicle had crashed in the northbound lanes south of Belmont Avenue and was surrounded by several police with their guns drawn and pointed at the vehicle.

The Sun-Times reported that two women and a child in a Toyota Avalon were rear-ended, though "it was not clear if it was related to the chase of the fugitive."

Who, incidentally, is armed.
