Taste The Ancient Beer Of Sumer At The Gage

If you’ve ever wondered what it was like to drink beer in ancient Sumer, you have a chance to try it out at The Gage this Wednesday. Intrepid guests will be able to drink Great Lakes Brewing’s reconstruction of an ancient Sumerian beer from a clay pot through straw reeds. If that sounds too weird, you can just do a regular tasting of both of their ancient beer reconstructions, which they made in partnership with archaeologists from the University of Chicago.
Sumer was an ancient kingdom in the Middle East and is considered one of the major historical birthplaces of beer. Great Lakes made two reconstructions – one that is a modern adaptation made in their brewpub and one made as close to the ancient way as possible, with the brewing done over an open fire.
Diners will enjoy three courses of food from The Gage paired with beer while they learn more about the history and science behind the project through presentations given by the brewers and archaeologists.
Dinner is at The Gage (24 S. Michigan Ave) on March 19 at 5 p.m. Tickets are required and are available on Brownpaper Tickets.
