Suspect Charged In Sunday's Lake Shore Drive Standoff

The suspect in Sunday’s standoff with police that shut down traffic on Lake Shore Drive for nearly nine hours was charged Tuesday with a host of grievances stemming from that incident.

Joseph Andrew Felton Jr. was ordered held without bond after being charged with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated battery and aggravated fleeing from police in the nearly 20-mile chase that started in Harvey and ended on Lake Shore Drive near Fullerton Avenue. Felton also faces murder charges in Henry County, Georgia, where he is suspected of killing his wife Sheray. Sheray Felton was murdered March 8 but her body wasn’t discovered until Saturday when her mother flew down from Chicago to check on her.

An autopsy determined Sheray Felton died of blunt force trauma and she had lacerations on her body caused “with an edged weapon.” She sought two orders of protection against Joseph Felton since 2011, claiming he was insanely jealous, was physically abusive toward her and threatened to kill her and her son if she left him. Court records show Sheray Felton claimed her husband held her captive and gagged her with a pair of basketball shorts in January, and he was charged with false imprisonment and simple battery.

Joseph Felton rammed into a vehicle full of people Sunday and appeared to be holding a shotgun as he tried to flee police, who opened fire on him. A statement from the Henry County Police Department said they plan to extradite Felton to face the charges pending against him there.
