Peterson Garden Project has made gardening a team sport in Chicago. With eight pop-up victory gardens peppered across the city donating 5 percent of their yield to local pantries, the nonprofit has long served as a produce powerhouse. Now it’s downright fearless. The Fearless Food Kitchen, with a home in the Broadway Armory, will soon offer community cooking classes, helping gardeners make the shift from plot to plate. Programming will target families, youth and seniors, helping us all maximize our harvest by canning, preserving and preparing fresh, seasonal meals while imparting the joys of home cooking. The only sticky wicket? The appliances and 18-foot farm table may be beautiful to behold, but the drawers are empty.

To stock up on pots, pans and utensils, PGP has launched a Kickstarter campaign with a goal of raising $5,500 in the next 15 days. As of post time, 99 backers have pledged just over $5,000, leaving you room to still do your part. A $50 donation will earn you this handy growing guide while helping Chicago become a more food-secure community. Seventy-five plots in 2014 alone are set to provide more than 10,000 meals for people in need through the Grow2Give program. So c’mon, give a guy a whisk.
