Everyone's favorite exercise in hipster conspicuous consumption, Record Store Day, is returning for a 2014 edition on Saturday, April 19.
Luckily, for the creative, budget-conscious music fanatic, a Lincoln Square record store has excellent live in-stores planned, while Chicago boutique reissue label Numero Group's pop-up record store returns.
On the in-store front, Laurie's Planet of Sound has a veritable smorgasbord of great local rock. Starting at noon, Laurie's kicks off with a BLVD Records mini-showcase featuring Fake Limbs and Savage Sister, according to the store's Facebook event page. (BLVD Records being the imprint run by Laurie's employee Melissa Geils.)
Following that, performances by local groups like The Lemons and The Handcuffs are scheduled, as are later day sets from psychedelic pop act Mazes (ex-The 1900s) and Chicago punk legends Silver Abuse.
Laurie's will open at 9 a.m. Saturday, and will close at 10 p.m. They'll also be giving out tote bags throughout the day. Classily named Chubby Wieners will serve breakfast and lunch at its Wiener Wagon. The best part is that more is set to come. Check out the Laurie's Facebook page for more details.
Laurie's Planet of Sound is located at 4639 N Lincoln Ave.
In other excellent Record Store Day news, Numero Group will open a one-day only pop-up record shop. The shop will be located in Logan Square's Comfort Station on April 19.
For the fourth consecutive year, Numero Group's pop-up store will, according to label's blog, return "with thousands of LPs, CDs, video tapes, cassettes, damaged stock, DVDs, trading cards, 45s, stickers, magazines, and all other manners of miscellaneous debris clogging up our office...".
The store will operate from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Comfort Station is located at 2579 N. Milwaukee Ave.
