Last Minute Plans: Rainbow Gun Show At The Burlington

We’re pretty stoked about the Slippery Kingdom psych and doom fest taking over the Burlington tomorrow and Saturday, but the Logan Square venue has a little somethin’ somethin’ going on tonight as well: Rainbow Gun Show is bringing their charming brand of 60s-inspired punk pop to the stage as part of HoZac Night.

We first came across Rainbow Gunshow a couple years back when the young band played Crown Liquors for a crowd that was low on people and abundant with inebriation. Since then, the act has become a regular name at some of our favorite little venues. It’s been a while since the band released a full-length album—their last was June 2012’s Not Quite a Butterfly, a short and sweet collection of catchy yet carefree lo-fi pop melodies (we’re talking hand clapping, playful synth, jangly riffs, tasty hooks).

Around this time last year the group also delivered a 7-inch featuring two tracks from the 2012 album (“Cinderella Sizzle” and “Demon U-Wave)” which is great and all but we’re seriously itching for some new material. Fortunately, these guys have some stuff in the works—they began recording a new HoZac EP a couple weeks ago and another EP’s worth of tracks they intend on self-releasing in the near future. For now, you can listen to Butterfly over at their Bandcamp page and pick up the 7-inch through HoZac.

Along with hosting Rainbow Gun Show, tonight’s show will open with local rockers The Holy Motors, and HoZac will DJ in the front room during the downtime. If you can’t make it out to the Burlington tonight, you can catch Rainbow Gun Show’s live performance next month when they play the Empty Bottle May 17 as part of HoZac Blackout Fest (supporting for NYC pop punks The Dictators).

Rainbow Gun Show plays tonight, April 10 at the Burlington, 3425 W Fullerton, 9 p.m., $5
