Anyone with ears can tell you that in the rock world there's a full on '90s resurgence going on. Luckily it's not the Nickelback / Limp Bizkit '90s, but rather the Sub Pop / Matador / indie label '90s. Massachusetts band Speedy Oritz has been benefiting from the shift in popular sound, drawing great press from all the important online purveyors of taste. We'll throw our lot in with that crew and say we have to agree the kind words the band is accumulating are well earned. Great smeary guitars wipe out everything in their path, but luckily the rhythm section and clear vocals are surfing just far enough ahead they snare your attention before knocking you off your feet. Their recent EP, Real Hair, shows the band is growing into their sound and wrenching it from comparisons to past bands and making it more fully their own.

The band has been touring extensively, most notably and appropriately—given their sound—opening for The Breeders for some of that band's Last Splash shows, and they're in town tonight to play The Empty Bottle. Given their rising profile, if you want an opportunity to see them in a small room, this might be your last chance.

Tonight, April 16, at The Empty Bottle, 1035 N Western, 8:30 p.m., $10, 21+
