Last Minute Plans: The Yolks At Cole's

Have we ever mentioned that we have a thing for The Yolks? It’s the creepy sort of thing where we accidentally Facebook-like their photos from 2009 at three in the morning and just happen to show up at all the frontman's regular watering holes. But we have good reason. This goofy gang of kids is driving Chicago’s 60s revival scene and, whether they’re playing as The Yolks or in one of their side gigs, they always seem to be making sweet sounds on a stage somewhere in the city, like at Cole’s tonight.
But first, a little about our infatuation. We first fell for The Yolks after hearing their (mostly) covers album, Songs The Yolks Taught Themselves, and soon realized they have much more than covers. The band has a knack for crafting loose and laid-back ditties—simple yet sweet jangly garage pop that makes you want to do the Twist barefoot on a beach (see “Sir Charles”) or drink and cry alone (“Ramblin’”).
Anyhow, check out this 7-inch the band released earlier this year, and catch the band when they headline at our favorite Logan Square dive Cole’s tonight. The show is free so waste your unspent money on booze and Tamale Guy treats. Also playing are Golden Pelicans and Son of a Gun.
The Yolks play tonight, April 18 at Cole’s, 2338 N Milwaukee, 10 p.m., free, 21+
