A 17-year-old boy has been charged as an adult in a February drive-by shooting that killed a 14-year-old in the West Woodlawn neighborhood.
Ahbir Sardin was ordered held on $1 million bond in the shooting that killed Venzel Richardson, a Dunbar Vocational High School student. Prosecutors said Richardson and some friends were walking toward the 6100 block of South Vernon Avenue when a white van approached. Sardin allegedly opened the door to the van and opened fire, killing Richardson. The area was the site of intensified skirmishes between the Gangster Disciples and Black Disciples street gangs.
Richardson's family became irate at the time of his death at the assumption the boy was affiliated with a gang. His aunt, Denise Richardson, said, “You can say he was in a gang, but you can’t knock on a door to give your condolence to my sister?”
