It wouldn’t be a proper ending to one of the worst winters in Chicago if the weather didn’t put up a fight at the end. After we’ve suffered through six months of below average temperatures, it looks like May is kicking off with more of the same. According to the National Weather Service, Thursday might end up being the coldest start to May in almost 75 years.
The Tribune reports the forecast high for Thursday is 46, which is 10 to 15 degrees below the normal average temperature for this time of the year. Oh, and more rain. This current slow-moving spring storm will continue with chilly temperatures and more rainfall until we finally have a chance to see some mixed sun on Saturday.
The last time the mercury dipped below 47 degrees on May 1 was 1940 when the temperature was 44 degrees. But hey, at least it isn’t as bad as 1909, when the recorded temperature on May 1 was 38 degrees. So remember, instead of bitching and moaning tomorrow, just repeat to yourself “at least it isn’t 1909.” Keep your chins up and no worries, in no time we’ll be sweating it out at a street festival and begging for shade.
