The Orwells Are In Town To Play A Free Show

The Orwells have been picking up a lot of steam over the last year. They've been polishing their garage punk into something a little shinier without sacrificing the raspy howl at the center of their best work. In Chicago there seems to be a trend of precocious young bands that start off in a mode of full-throated fury too often quickly transitioning to something that would sound better on '70s soft rock radio stations. The Orwells are follwing that pattern, but their sound shares more in common with The Stooges—whom they often cover in concert.
The group has a new album coming out next month and they're in town tomorrow to play a free show at the Burton store. We're curious to see if they're still heading into more dangerous territory with their sound so hopefully this gig will give a sneak peek into their new material ahead of its June release. Their new track, "Southern COmfort," has us thinking the band is still firmly on the right track.
The Orwells play tomorrow, May 9, at the Burton Chicago Flagship Store, 56 E. Walton, 6 p.m., FREE with RSVP, 21+
