Up next: A week of plot twists and shock value on the Chicago stage.

M. Butterfly
Based on the Puccini opera, M. Butterfly’s depiction of a Chinese opera singer’s love affair with a French diplomat is an exploration of sexual politics and deception. Spoiler alert: Things get weird, but we’re okay with that. The show runs through Sunday, June 8.

Court Theatre, 5535 S. Ellis Ave., 773-753-4472 or online.

5 Lesbians Eating a Quiche
5 Lesbians Eating a Quiche is back in Chicago. The outlandish, sharply funny show follows a group of 1950s housewives at their annual quiche brunch. Hilarity ensues. The show runs through Sunday, June 8.

Chopin Theatre, 1543 W. Division, 773-278-1500 or online.

The Next Thing
Film nerds unite: Signal Ensemble’s world-premiere musical is a thorough dissection (or at least a solid attempt) of zany Hollywood antics and the shape-shifting movie biz. The show runs through Saturday, June 7.

Signal Ensemble Theatre, 1802 W. Berenice Ave., 773-698-7389 or online.
