Sumi Robata Bar specializes in meat and fish grilled expertly over charcoal. Mostly, it’s served plain, but they have a few other selections which make the restaurant truly versatile. One of the best is the Yakitori Don, a filling bowl of chicken and rice that pairs really well with their Japanese beer selection.

Chicken and rice might sound modest, but there is much more to the Yakitori Don here. It’s topped with tare, which is best known as ramen’s secret ingredient but adds a richly sweet, savory and salty element to any dish it touches. The chicken pieces are tender and silky morsels of grilled perfection. They arrive on exquisitely cooked fluffy rice, topped with little strips of nori seaweed, green onions and a gooey poached egg.

Sumi Robata Bar is located at 702 N Wells St.
