Take A Trip Back To The Maxwell Street Market Circa 1964

By Chuck Sudo in Arts & Entertainment on May 21, 2014 2:45PM

If you're looking for a morning time-waster, have we got the thing for you. Mike Shea's 1964 film And This Is Free is a 50-minute documentary looking at the old Maxwell Street Market, unvarnished.

Shea's camera captures the hustle, bustle, cons, guile, and bluster of the market's vendors and customers, while also preserving for Posterity some amazing blues performances courtesy of Kartemquin Films founding member and Artistic Director Gordon Quinn.

The musical numbers were later gathered for a music box set, "And This is Maxwell Street."
