Consider taking public transit or, dare we suggest, saddling a bicycle this weekend. The Illinois Department of Transportation will begin major construction on the Kennedy Expressway tonight involving demolishing and completely rebuilding the Ontario Street feeder ramps and the Ohio Street Bridge, projects which are long overdue.

The construction will happen over the next three weekends. From 10 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday morning, the eastbound Kennedy will be closed to traffic. Other closures include:

- The inbound Kennedy expressway from Chicago to Grand Ave. and the reversible lanes
- One lane on the outbound Kennedy from Grand to Ogden
- The westbound Ontario feeder ramp
- The Augusta, Division and Jackson entrance ramps

Additionally, traffic on the inbound Kennedy will narrow to two lanes at Diversey, forced off at Ohio and onto a turn-around to re-enter the inbound Kennedy. This construction means the Eisenhower and Stevenson expressways and southbound Lake Shore Drive will have to pick up the slack. With large festivals like Chicago Blues Fest, Randolph Street Fest and others planned for the weekend, public transit is highly recommended, especially if you have to travel downtown.

If you're driving and not going downtown, take the Tri-State Tollway or I-355.
