It’s that time again when people all over the world come together to fly their flags and cheer until their voices are hoarse. It’s World Cup time! The first game kicked off Thursday between Brazil and Croatia. And so, after months of anticipation, the craziness has begun. People everywhere have been waiting years for the return of the international tournament. This playlist is for them.

The songs in this playlist come from a combination of places. Many are official World Cup songs for this year, including “We Are One (Ole Ola)”, and “All Night”. Others come from this year’s World Cup album, One Love, One Rhythm, such as “The World is Ours” and “Dar um Jeito”.

“Seven Nation Army” is a common theme song for the US team, while “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life” is a crowd favorite of British fans. Lupe Fiasco is featured this week because the Chicago native was named the Music Director for the USA Men’s National Team for the World Cup this year.

One thing that the World Cup, like other international sporting events, brings us is the opportunity to come together as nations, but also as part of a much larger world for a shared experience. These themes of national pride and global community are a common thread throughout the playlist. May this playlist serve you well until the final match on July 13.
