'The Signal' Is The Surreal Sci-Fi Head Trip Of Your Dreams

If you're the type who likes a movie that stays with you a while, that sneaks into your thoughts for days afterward, you're in luck: The Signal is just that.

Part coming-of-age tale, part acid trip, the film follows three college students on a road trip across the Southwest. Like any good thriller, the tech-savvy trio soon experience a detour: the tracking of a genius who has hacked into MIT and exposed security faults. Finding themselves drawn to an eerily isolated area, everything suddenly goes dark. When one of the students, Nic, regains consciousness, he is in a waking nightmare with a mysterious "condition."

The film stars Laurence Fishburne (doing his best vaguely-intentioned smoothtalking since The Matrix), Brenton Thwaites (of The Giver and Maleficent), Olivia Cooke, Lin Shaye, and Sarah Clarke. William Eubank directs this independent film after his 2011 directorial debut with Love, a similarly abstract meditation on space and isolation.
